The Origins of Swedish Death Metal

by Clément Bruni

As the birthplace of an ever-increasing number of metal groups, Sweden proved their worth internationally in the early 90s when a dynamic crowd of metalheads burst onto the scene. We look back in time to understand how Swedish death metal developed and what made it so original.

Much like the English-speaking scene, the movement’s development and increased visibility started to attract the attention of the mainstream media. Nevertheless, unlike the English press which vilified and rejected death metal, the Swedish press warmed to it rather well, especially towards Entombed who soon became the media darling. The band appeared in the tabloids, celebrity magazines and on television. This over-mediatisation reached a climax when the band featured La Camilla – the disco diva from Army Of Lovers – in their video clip Stranger Aeons and found themselves pictured in the papers baking ginger biscuits. In short, death metal was much more accepted in Sweden than in the United States or England. However, this move into the mainstream was not without its consequences, and a fringe of the underground searched for more a radical sound, especially with the even-more-marginal black metal.

The development and success of the Swedish death metal scene followed a similar trajectory to the Anglo-Saxon scene up until their fusion in the early 90s. However, its initial isolation helped give the musicians a freer approach. In this way, melodic death metal and death’n’roll are purely Swedish innovations, which helped accelerate the changing sound of death metal as it mixed with other genres. This in turn contributed to the rise of a new wave of bands in the second half of the 90s, when pioneering bands were looking for exciting new avenues to explore.
