About Playlist

From the early days of Post Punk to the Madchester era, from the electronic revolution to Britpop, Manchester and its greater area have always been the cradle of numerous musical currents and gave birth to major British bands such as Joy Division, The Smiths, Oasis, The Stone Roses and so many more, featured in this playlist that retraces 50 years of Mancunian music.

Ian Curtis, Industrial and Universal Poet

by Marc Zisman

It’s been about forty years since the singer from Joy Division took his own life, but the shadow of his death still hangs over post-punk, new wave and rock history. In just two albums, the cult band from Manchester turned grey skies, depression and urban industrialisation into beautiful music thanks to their charismatic leader, who is just as influential today.

Ian Curtis embodied this ground-breaking electronic and synthesised sound through his words and actions, his lyrics and his character. He was somewhat reserved and yet confident in his determination to sing, and even before he had met his bandmates, he kept a stack of notebooks in which he’d jot down lyrics when they came to him. His wife Deborah Curtis whom he married on August 23rd, 1975, at the age of just 19, described his mixture of ambition and despair to Jon Savage, “I think he wanted to be like Jim Morrison, someone who got famous and died. Being in a band was very important, he was very single-minded about it. He’d always said that he didn’t want to live into his twenties, after twenty-five. I think it was the teenage thing. Teenagers like to have something to be miserable about, don’t they? But it changed. He stopped talking about it. I don’t think he forgot about it. I thought he’d grow out of it. And when it got too late really, he wouldn’t talk about it. You couldn’t discuss it with him, you couldn’t find out what was really going on”.

Ian Curtis was, in essence, the embodiment of the dark, introspective and tortured prose which depicted his emotional despair in the gloom and austerity of industrial Manchester. His powerful lyrics, which are at times more spoken than sung, are intensified by his deep baritone voice. “Ian brought a direction”, says Bernard Sumner. “Ian was into the extremities of life. He wanted to make extreme music, and he wanted to be totally extreme on stage, no half measures. If we were writing a song, he would say: “Let’s make it more manic! It’s too straight, let’s make it more manic!”. Ian Curtis’ manic side also came out during live performances where his violent contortions can only be described as those of a butterfly trapped in a halogen lamp. Some may have seen it as the choreography of an epileptic neo-Nijinski, but what they probably didn’t know was that the singer was indeed suffering from epilepsy to the extent that nobody was sure whether his seizures were put on for concerts or were real. As Joy Division became more famous and their concerts intensified, so did his epileptic seizures, which were now quite real. They were like an echo of a life which was becoming increasingly unbearable, a paroxysm of his heartbreak as his marriage broke down. He had a loving wife who gave birth to a baby girl in April, 1979, and a mistress (the Belgian journalist Annik Honoré) who he met on tour seven months later and had grown extremely fond of, but his desire not to hurt anyone’s feelings was, of course, impossible. Ian Curtis’ physical condition worsened but he still went to the recording sessions in March, 1980, for Joy Division’s second and final album, Closer. All that had characterised Unknown Pleasures had now been pushed to the extreme in this two-disc release, the first five tracks driven by guitars (Atrocity Exhibition, Passover, Colony, A Means to an End, Twenty Four Hours) and the following four by synths (Isolation, Heart and Soul, The Eternal, Decades).

It was not until two months after the death of Ian Curtis that this second album hit the record stores on July 18th, 1980. Closer is a rock album without the roll and the soundtrack that best reflected the singer’s angst. As with all of Joy Division’s music, it has militarily precise drumbeats, shrill guitars, vocals that teeter on the edge of sanity, melodies with darkness and devastation lurking beneath them and lyrics that give the listener a sense of claustrophobia. This is the album that laid down the new tables of the law for post-punk, a genre that has its roots in Velvet's early work, Bowie’s Berlin trilogy, The Doors and German krautrock. “On Closer, I wanted to push the search for the Joy Division sound even further”, Martin Hannett told Libération in 1990. “I found all kinds of reverb techniques. I entered all sorts of numbers into the computer. I felt like I was making magic, I was so proud. I thought to myself, I made this record, I made it myself, and you can feel that sense of pain listening to it! Afterwards, I’d wondered if I’d gone too far in crystallising that pain”.

But there was light at the end of the tunnel for the remaining members of Joy Division. In the years following Ian Curtis’ death, they became New Order, one of the first bands to successfully combine rock ‘n’ roll with dance music. The singer’s life has also been made into a fantastic biographical film called Control, directed by photographer Anton Corbijn. As for Hannett, he was involved in the early days of the Madchester movement and produced songs for The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays before passing away in 1991 at the age of 42. Over time, the aura and the myth around Ian Curtis will only grow stronger. His time as an artist was short-lived but his work is now universal, as Frenchman Marc Collin proved in 2004 with his project Nouvelle Vague which covered the artist’s greatest song, Love Will Tear Us Apart, in a bossa nova style. Taking his poetry from rainy Manchester to sunny Copacabana shows just how much artistic potential Ian Curtis had, and brings with it a great sense of sorrow for his loss.
