Lianne La Havas
Lianne La Havas is an English singer and multi-instrumentalist. Serving up her own unique brand of soul music, tinged with both acoustic and velvety ambiances, she first attracted attention for her collaborations with Paloma Faith and Christian Pinchbeck. She was subsequently signed to Warner, and has since embarked upon a blossoming solo career.
Lianne Charlotte Barnes was born in 1989, in London, to a Jamaican mother and a Greek father. Her parents divorced soon after her birth, and La Havas spent the majority of her childhood living with her grandparents. Despite this rapid early separation, La Havas did receive a deep love of music from both her parents, who were musicians. At the age of seven, she began to sing, and by the age of eleven had composed her first song. La Havas studied art at Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls in Croydon, but quickly abandoned this in order to focus more fully on her musical career.
The singer Allan Rose, La Havas’s close friend, helped to give her a big break by introducing her to the English artist Paloma Faith. Faith was impressed, offering La Havas the opportunity to tour with her as a backing singer. Following this, La Havas formed the duo ‘The Paris Parade’ with collaborator Christian Pinchbeck. Despite her relative youth, these experiences helped La Havas to establish a reputation, and to sign to Warner Records. Her first EP, ‘Lost & Found’, was released in 2011, which included a successful collaboration with Willy Mason. Shortly after this, the EP ‘Live from L.A’ was made available from her official website. Still in the same year, La Havas was chosen by Bon Iver to open for him on his North American Tour.
In 2012, Lianne La Havas released her first record, ‘Is Your Love Big Enough?’, produced by Matt Hales. The disc was one of the year’s surprise packages, and established La Havas as one of the most acclaimed artists of the present moment. She was even approached by Prince; resulting in the duo performing together on the American television programme Saturday Night Live.
La Havas’s second album was released in July 2015, and is called Blood. Drawing inspiration largely from her Jamaican and Greek roots, the record contains collaborations with the producers Stephen McGregor and Paul Epworth. © LG / Qobuz
