Thirteen years after Endless Wire, the eminence grise Pete Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey are back together again with the simply named album Who. They are the only two surviving members of The Who; their eccentric drummer Keith Moon died from an overdose in 1978 and their bassist John Entwistle had a cardiac arrest in 2002. Townshend wrote the songs with the aim of inspiring Daltrey, with whom he doesn’t keep up much contact these days. Everything was composed in 2018 and written for his 70-year-old voice.

Townshend says that the album is made up of “dark ballads, heavy rock stuff, experimental electronica, sampled stuff and Who-ish tunes that began with a guitar that goes yanga-dang”. Sure, it’s got The Who written all over it: a radiant rock energy, striking guitars and Daltrey at his finest. Though it is less experimental. While The Who have previously stood out for their mini-operas both short (Wire & Glass, A Quick One) and long (Tommy, Quadrophenia), this last work concentrates on eleven songs without trying to turn them into a cohesive whole. Townsend commented “there is no theme, no concept, no story, just a set of songs”. Despite their age, this album is a brilliantly vibrant patchwork and while it does not reach the poetic heights of Who’s Next, it has the merit of cementing Townshend’s genius. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz

Led Zeppelin: 50 Years of Rock

In 2018, Led Zeppelin celebrated their 50th birthday, but the only "present" on offer is a beautiful book which will come out on sale in Autumn. After having made their mark on the history of rock in just 12 years, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones have often reunited on stage and in the studio after the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, with varying degrees of success. Let's take a look back at Led Zep's different comebacks, which we hope might throw up some nice ideas for a really good birthday concert...

Nick Cave: Bad Seed

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds remain one of the most prolific adventures of the post-punk era. Since the late 1980s, the vast magnetism of the Australian singer has swirled through violent paroxysms, fulminating covers, piano ballads and sweaty rock'n'roll. As the years went by, Cave became more and more of a crooner, part way between a punk Frank Sinatra and an austere Johnny Cash.

Paul McCartney in 10 Solo Albums

With 60 gold records, Paul McCartney is one of the most gifted songwriters in the history of pop music. Now that he’s approaching his 80th birthday (after 60 years of writing hit after hit), Qobuz looks back on his post-Beatles years, exploring his huge discography and highlighting the top 10 essential albums.
