The bulk of the Lester Young's studio recordings brought together by Verve comes from the last decade of his life (1949-59) when he was declining physically (he suffered from severe depression and was drinking heavily) and musically although still capable of improvising impressively, playing beautiful solos exhibiting his world-weariness. In these Studio Sessions he appears with a trio including Nat Cole and Buddy Rich (1946), then in quartets, quintets, and sextets with collective personnel that includes trumpeters Jesse Drakes, Harry Edison, and Roy Eldridge, trombonist Vic Dickenson, and pianists Hank Jones, John Lewis, and Teddy Wilson and concluding with a 1959 Paris session that proved to be Young's last. Since 1940 his style had evolved towards slower tempi like blues, ballads. If his last solos are less inventive, they are strangely moving.
