The booklet notes by Peter Avis for this recording of Ethel Smyth's one-act opera Der Wald are highly enjoyable and contain the information that the work, translated from German to English, was performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1903. It was the first opera by a woman performed there and the last until Kaija Saariaho's L'Amour de Loin in 2016. It is the English version that is performed here, with a full libretto in the booklet probably desirable, although the singers are clear enough. Credit goes to the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conductor John Andrews, and a cast of young singers for giving it a new shot at the repertory. The tale is a little woodland tragedy in prose dialogue. One might call it Wagner-lite, with archetypical figures in a story revolving around the interruption of a sacred ritual by the killing of a roebuck that is dumped in a well. The libretto is by Smyth's friend Henry Brewster, and its language is crisp and direct. There is a large role for a chorus of spirits, here embodied expertly by the BBC Singers. The opera was a work composed with top-flight musicians in mind, and it gets those here. Resonus Classics' studio sound is fine in a recording that will be essential for those interested in music by women and also for any opera company looking to spice up its repertory a bit.
