Always ready to show his support and admiration for lesser-known composers of rare originality (such as Charles Koechlin for example, whose symphonic works he’s recorded almost in their entirety), Heinz Holliger, alongside German baritone Christian Gerhaher, offers a deeply moving version of Othmar Schoeck’s incredible Elegie Op. 36.
Unbeknownst to most of the general public, Swiss composer Schoeck (1886-1957) has left behind a catalogue of around 400 lieder which closely resembles the twilight romanticisms of Hugo Wolf, as well as texts by great German poets such as Goethe, Heine, Mörike, Hesse, Spitteler but primarily Von Eichendorff. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau took a great interest in Schoeck’s works, which he recorded for the Claves label at the end of his career. Schoeck is also the creator of some number of operas, including Penthesilea and Venus, both of which were inspired by ancient Greece: a part of history that had captivated the whole of Germany.
Composed in 1922, shortly after Venus, the immense song cycle Elegie Op. 36 comprises 24 lieder for voice, a chamber orchestra and a piano. The young composer’s work expresses great sadness through the poems of Lenau and Von Eichendorff. Undoubtedly, this is a reflection of his own hapless experiences of love. The music is dominated by a serene sense of grief, coupled with a romanticism that’s sometimes marred with strange, almost ghostly harmonies that seem to suspend time. Christian Gerhaher perfectly preserves the sorrow and misery of the original work. He includes every tiny detail of the poems, and each one complements the direction of Heinz Holliger, a conductor who has the necessary knowledge and grace to reveal the true quintessence of Schoeck’s delicate and bewitching instrumentations. A truly incredible recording. © François Hudry/Qobuz
