Since the accidental death of the Swedish pianist Esbjörn Svensson in 2008, the rhythmic section of the E.S.T. trio have never truly mourned what happened... For the Rymden project, drummer Magnus Öström and bassist Dan Berglund team up with Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft. During the ‘90s, much like E.S.T., Wesseltoft turned Scandinavian jazz upside down - and jazz in general for that matter - with his New Conception of Jazz. However, this album is not about looking in the rear-view mirror. It’s about three people making good music. Hardcore fans of Wesseltoft, as well as E.S.T. fans, will probably find traces of the past here and there. But most of all, Reflections and Odysseys offers up a clean slate. Divided between acoustic and electric sounds, Bugge Wesseltoft leaves space for his Swedish accomplices. Rymden is without a doubt less intense than E.S.T., though their sound isn’t overly meditative. One thing is certain: Wesseltoft, Öström and Berglund have a lot to share and this album is probably only the first chapter of a long story... © Max Dembo/Qobuz
