Rage is a Korean thriller making the connection between a sordid crime and three characters, in three different Japanese cities (Chiba, Tokyo and Okinawa). As often with Sakamoto, piano is at the center of his partition, in a style often reminiscent of the French music from the beginning of the 20th century. The influence of Eric Satie’s Gymnopédies for example can clearly be felt in a piece like Rally, especially in the succession of chords. But the Japanese composer appends synth pads to the piano, which not only modernizes his approach but also reinforces the oneiric side of his music. Just like in his latest solo album Async, Sakamoto turns toward an extreme stripping-down that exudes sadness or tranquility, depending on the moment, and sometimes both at the same time. It’s probably in the track Incident that this blend appears most vividly. Toward the end of the album, Sakamoto tackles an epic 10-minute track, Trust, in which you’ll find the legendary lyricism of the composer of Furyo—even if, once again, this lyricism is mixed with a strange serenity. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
