Ahead of the reissue of the Exodus album for its 45th anniversary, Island is releasing Bob Marley and The Wailers’ famous series of concerts from The Rainbow in London in June 1977. After releasing a remastered version of the June 4th concert in 2020, the label founded by Chris Blackwell is now proposing three records that will allow fans to enjoy the entire first three nights (June 1st, 2nd and 3rd) in a whole new way. To put things into context, Marley (who had retreated to London following an assassination attempt in his Jamaican home) had released his two new albums, Exodus and Kaya, in January 1977. These would eventually catapult him to the very top of the pop industry. At the beginning of May, the Jamaican musicians started their tour in Paris, where Bob was injured during a football match with some journalists. The injury led to the discovery of a melanoma that would take his life four years later, and it was enough to bring the tour to an end one month later. The final days of the tour featured a four-night fireworks display in London, with the Wailers weaving various tracks from the new album Exodus into each of the nights. They played a heap of future hits, including The HeathenWarJamming and Natural Mystic. The concerts were topped off with classic tracks such as I Shot the Sheriff and No Woman No Cry, and each one would end with a mash-up of Get Up Stand Up and Exodus, which the band strung together in one single twenty-minute movement. This is a stunning record from start to finish. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
