Chilton had previously been a member of the Box Tops and Big Star before embarking on a solo career. Produced by himself with Jim Dickinson and released in 1979, Like Flies on Sherbert was recorded at two Memphis studios, Phillips Recording and Ardent Studios, in 1978 and 1979. A number of CD reissues followed in the 1990s and 2000s, some with bonus tracks such as the one in 1996 which adds Baby Doll, She’s the One That’s Got It and Stranded on a Dateless Night. The songs on the album were either Chilton originals or cover versions of songs by artists including KC and the Sunshine Band, The Bell Notes, Ernest Tubb and the Carter Family. This album included backing work from such notable Memphis musicians as Rosebrough, drummer Ross Johnson, and Chilton's longtime on-again/off-again companion, Lesa Aldridge. Years later, for Robert Gordon’s book on the Memphis music scene, It Came from Memphis, Chilton stated, “My life was on the skids, and Like Flies on Sherbert was a summation of that period. I like that record a lot. It’s crazy but it’s a positive statement about a period in my life that wasn’t positive.”
This album was found a chaotic mess by most people’s standards, with its content of "gutbucket R&B" and deliberately torpedoed pop and country songs. Critic Robert Christgau described them as a “bag of wrecked covers and discarded originals”, with false starts and vocal and musical errors, either created by accident or on purpose. Yet this album has continued to be reissued. And Alex Chilton is no less an cult artist, frequently cited by influential rock artists and bands and considered, especially in France, as an underground icon whose influence was major. (Qobuz)
