By choosing to record this new interpretation of Vivaldi’s La Senna festeggiante (“Festival on the Seine”) at the Palace of Versailles, Diego Fasolis only adds to the mystery surrounding this work. Nothing is known about the circumstances that led to Vivaldi creating this vast serenade which pays homage to Louis XV of France and the Seine that runs through its capital. Was it commissioned and performed, like other works by the Red Priest, at the French Embassy in Venice? Unfortunately, contemporary knowledge and understanding is yet to answer this question.
Only the music and the libretto can shed light on this otherwise contextless work. Given its monumentality and generally “French” style, this serenade was almost certainly created for official, perhaps even political, purposes. As for the libretto, it clearly alludes to the coronation of Louis XV with L'Age d'or (Gwendoline Blondeel, soprano), La Vertu (Lucile Richardot, mezzo), La Seine (Luigi De Donato, bass) and the choir (Nicolas Scott, tenor) all singing the praises of the young king; how “piety and gentleness shape his face” whilst “virtue and greatness shape his heart”.
Recorded in February 2021 in the sublime setting of the Royal Opera, this Senna festeggiante (which is more a miniature opera than a cantata) sheds light on the relationship between Venice and Versailles with these allegorical figures singing the praises of the new monarch and the whole of France. This recording was meticulously carried out under the best possible conditions, thanks to the patience and tact of Diego Fasolis. Organist, conductor and choirmaster, this Swiss musician from Lugano has specialised in the interpreatation of baroque music for years, both in his home town and throughout the rest of Europe.
