Overblown YouTube success can sometimes do much to harm an artist’s integrity. Sometimes. In this case, the web’s favourite son is verging on prodigious. And “son” is indeed fitting, when you remember that Jacob was only 21 when this album came out. Born and raised by YouTube, the young talent put up videos of himself performing, but with a twist. In each video, filmed at his home studio, Jacob plays all the parts (on a dazzling variety of instruments) and sings all the harmonies. Fitting then, that this album is called In My Room. On it, the young Brit has opted for his trademark blend of jazz fusion and vocal heavy songwriting, while dipping both into the sparkling waters of groove, folk, trip-hop, classical, Brazilian, gospel and soul! Thanks to his pretty elastic voice, Jacob Collier bases his sound on solid ground (difficult not to think of Stevie Wonder, Bobby McFerrin or Ed Motta), and whether he’s putting a twist on old classics or performing his own, his flamboyant maestro attitude is captivating. A real revelation. @CM/Qobuz
