When Kacy Anderson and Clayton Linthicum first met Jeff Tweedy in the autumn of 2016, their lives took an unexpected turn. The lead singer from Wilco was mesmerised straight away by the two distant cousins from Saskatchewan, Canada and invited them to record in his studio, ‘The Loft’ in Chicago, where he then produced their album The Siren’s Song. The duo are now releasing their sixth album Carrying On, once again with the help of Tweedy’s production skills. The Canadians continue their exploration into the world of psychedelic folk and British folk revival from the ‘60s and ‘70s, adding hints of southern Appalachian music and country rock (Buffalo Springfield, Gram Parsons, Gene Clark, Sir Douglas Quintet). There may be a lot of references to the 20 th century but with the sophisticated vocals and charming lyrics in Carrying On, this sepia-coloured album is far from old-fashioned. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

Daniel Johnston, A Troubling, Troubled Icon

No one ever sounded like Daniel Johnston. The little known depressive artist found fame thanks to his peers’ recognition. He passed away on September 11th, 2019, at the age of 58; his discography has slowly become the symbol of naïve, lo-fi and hyper-emotional music. It’s never too late to (re)discover this bona fide underground genius, and his heartfelt, authentic music.

Outlaw Country: Nashville Uprising

In the early 1970’s, a group of musicians from Nashville radically challenged the city’s musical tradition, its codes, its smooth productions and its clichés. With Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and a few other long-haired rebels who were deeply influenced by rock and roll, this new trend defied country music’s conservatism.

Americana, America Through its Roots

The title may sound like a nebulous marketing ploy, and yet for about twenty years, Americana had been summarizing this blend of rock, country, blues and rhythm ‘n’ blues. And like in every big family, you’ll find almost every type of person: the rebellious daughter, the cultivated uncle, the agitated father, the driven cousin, etc.
