Various recordings of Bach's keyboard concertos are on the market, but this one by Steven Devine and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment has several distinctive features. One is the reconstruction of the fragmentary Keyboard Concerto in D minor, BWV 1059, that probably was planned to grow from the opening Sinfonia of the Cantata No. 35, "Geist und Seele wird verwirret." This is convincing and seems entirely of a piece with the three other concertos included, especially in the virtuoso keyboard writing that pervades all four. Another attraction here is the close and precise interaction between Devine and the ensemble, of which he is the regular harpsichordist. Devine is a powerful player, generating a good deal of momentum in unusually fast movements like the finale of the Keyboard Concerto in A major, BWV 1055, and the players keep up with him. Distinctive as well, although not necessarily desirable, is the one-instrument-per-part performance, which results in a flat, contrast-poor texture that doesn't set off the solo playing. Listeners will have their own opinions about this, and enough are buying to have landed the album on classical best-seller charts in the summer of 2023. The watery sound from St. John Smith's Square also reduces the profile of the soloist, but those who like the basic sound Devine crafts here will find unusually energetic performances.
