A year after the Philly Specials landed in the top half of the Billboard 200 with the fundraising album A Philly Special Christmas, the trio of Philadelphia Eagles offensive linemen -- Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, and Jordan Mailata -- return with A Philly Special Christmas Special. Again recorded with the War on Drugs' Charlie Hall producing, it's a more star-studded affair that welcomes guests like R&B legend Patti LaBelle (in duet with Mailata on a cover of Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas"), Philadelphia singer/songwriter Amos Lee (on a rendition of "The Christmas Song"), and Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield, who is part of the ensemble on a loyally rustic, Lane Johnson-led version of Willie Nelson's "Pretty Paper." While the Philly Specials stuck primarily to soul on their debut effort, here they offer more variety, including a surprisingly piano jazz-oriented "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" featuring country singer Jordan Davis, the novelty outing "Dominick the Donkey," an appearance by Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman on an early rock & roll/R&B edition of "The Dreidel Song," and a take on the Pogues with the Travis Kelce-featuring "Fairytale of Philadelphia." There's also a Jason Kelce original, the country-pop song "Santa's Night," which is delivered by none other than Santa. To close the mercurial 11-song collection, the Philly Specials perform alongside close-harmony vocal group the Silver Ages on an a cappella version of "Auld Lang Syne" featuring dialogue that welcomes everyone to the celebration and thanks listeners for supporting both the team and the music project. A Philly Special Christmas Special improved upon the chart position of the original by rising into the Billboard 200 Top 30.
