Tapir!

With their origins based in live performance, the yearning, otherworldly indie folk of art collective Tapir! transports listeners across mythical landscapes through poignant, character-driven narratives. Talked into recording by Honeyglaze's Yuri Shibuichi, who caught one of their shows in London, they made their full-length debut with the three-act The Pilgrim, Their God and the King of My Decrepit Mountain in 2024. Vocalist/guitarist Ike Gray and keyboardist/drum machine operator Will McCrossan launched Tapir! in 2019. The project only played one show, at George Tavern in East London, before venues in the U.K. shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gray and McCrossan moved Tapir! online, developing songs on acoustic guitar and an Elektron drum machine. The tracks that formed the basis of their debut album were fashioned over the next year with help from the art collective My Life Is Big, and Tapir! gradually recruited additional official members Tom Rogers-Coltman (guitar/saxophone), Ronnie Longfellow (bass), Emily Hubbard (cornet/synthesizer), and Wilf Cartwright (drums/cello) as venues reopened. A member of the London post-punk scene, Honeyglaze drummer Yuri Shibuichi caught one of their shows in London, and his enthusiasm surrounding the idea that they should record, combined with their securing a spot at 2022's Green Man Rising, encouraged them to take the project more seriously. Shibuichi went on to produce Tapir!'s debut album. It was released as three separate EPs -- or acts -- leading up to the arrival of the entire The Pilgrim, Their God and the King of My Decrepit Mountain on Heavenly Recordings in January of 2024.
