Still under-the-radar, the South London sextet Tapir! have released a breathtaking debut album with a folk charm under first-rate independent label Heavenly Recordings. Behind its lengthy name, The Pilgrim, Their God and the King of My Decrepit Mountain brings together an almost mythological tale in three acts, the first two of which were released in 2023, telling the story of a pilgrim whose odyssey is populated by strange characters. Short, haiku-like lyrics describe gods (“Their God”), mountains (“Mountain Song”), eidolons, creatures, bones thrown into water (“The Nether (Face To Face)”) – and Erik Satie (“Gymnopédie”). The undeniably poetic DIY concept album gathers lighthearted guitar melodies, strings, a myriad of wind and percussion instruments, bells, synths, field recordings, and choirs (“On a Grassy Knoll (We’ll Bow Together)”) around Ike Gray, whose hypnotic voice recites the story. One hears marine landscapes and rolling hills where the wind blows and birds soar.
