Spencer Burton
Although he came up through the world of Canadian indie rock, Spencer Burton has built his solo career as a troubadour rooted in a blend of earthy country and folk music. In the mid-2000s he played guitar for rangy Ontario combo Attack in Black before striking out on his own in 2010. After a pair of moody singer/songwriter albums under the name Grey Kingdom, Burton forged a more rustic, big-hearted sound on 2014's Don't Let the World See Your Love. It was his first release using his own name and marked a turning point toward the country-driven style of subsequent albums like The Mountain Man (2019) and Coyote (2021). Recorded in Nashville, Burton's fifth album, North Wind, was released at the beginning of 2024.
A native of Welland, Ontario, near Niagara Falls, Burton and friends Daniel and Ian Romano formed Attack in Black in 2003. After adding bassist Ian Daniel Kehoe, the band slowly developed from a hardcore punk act to a more eclectic and melodic indie rock combo. They were one of the earliest acts signed to Dine Alone Records and went on to release three albums for the label in the late 2000s. Following Attack in Black's breakup in 2009, Burton remained on Dine Alone's roster and began a solo career under the moniker Grey Kingdom. His two releases under that name -- 2011's Eulogy of Her and Her and Her and 2012's Light, I'll Call Your Name Out "Darkness" -- skewed more toward introspective indie rock with atmospheric textures and folk elements. With 2014's Don't Let the World See Your Love, issued under his given name, Burton made a more concentrated shift toward acoustic-based roots music with strong country and Americana elements. His 2017 follow-up, Songs Of, was similar in tone, but with a more experimental bent, not unlike his former bandmate Daniel Romano. As with each of his previous releases, 2019's undeniably folky The Mountain Man was released by longtime label Dine Alone.
By the start of the next decade, Burton and his family were ensconced on a farm in rural Ontario and this lifestyle was reflected in the earthy feel of his next record, 2021's Coyote. After this, he endured a difficult period of personal isolation, writing little and focusing on his home and family. When he began writing again, his focus had shifted into a more relaxed and hopeful setting, and he soon headed down to Nashville to record his fifth album. Released in January 2024, North Wind delved even deeper into the rustic country-folk style of his later output.
