Produit par le groupe, le premier album des Only Ones est naturellement entraîné par leur composition majeure, cette « Another Girl, Another Planet » qui constituera la plus efficace campagne de promotion pour ce combo débutant. Après tout, la chanson est supposée évoquer la drogue et ses effets (pas méfaits, naturellement), ce qui était à l’époque particulièrement couru. Mais si l’on excepte ce titre majeur, et emblématique, qu’est ce qui a fait la renommée des Only Ones, bien contre leur gré embarqués dans la mouvance punk du moment ?
C’est très simple : ils jouent bien, avec concision mais efficience, et Peter Perrett est un grand chanteur, à la voix maniérée tout à fait remarquable, et un bon compositeur, habile à capter l’air du temps et à en offrir un rendu romantique. Surtout, même s’ils sont capables d’envoyer le bois d’un rock énergique (promis, on n’évoque plus leur hymne), ils s’avèrent pareillement à l’aise dans les climats délétères de la grande variété des années cinquante (« The Whole of the Law »), ou des ambiances totalement acoustiques (« No Peace for the Wicked »).
La cohérence du propos en pâtit (rappelons qu’en 1978 on pouvait enregistrer un album entier sur trois accords et deux idées), mais la variété des atmosphères font de The Only Ones un classique absolu de la décennie qui pointe avec énergie le bout de son nez.
