Dans un premier temps, Eminem a établi son alter ego, Slim Shady. Dans un deuxième temps, il a sorti le LP Marshall Mathers, creusant plus loin dans son passé tout en révélant sa complexité en tant qu’artiste. Dans un troisième temps, il sort The Eminem Show, dont le titre signale que c’est la personne publique d’Eminem qui occupera ici le devant de la scène. Il passe une bonne partie de l’album à commenter le cirque médiatique qui a dominé sa vie, en y associant une production très similaire à celle de son prédécesseur : simple, funky, fluide et vibrant. The Eminem Show est essentiellement un album de mise en attente, mais il n’en est pas moins splendide. Il est la preuve qu'Eminem est la référence numéro un de la musique populaire en 2002, avec sa musique stylée, accrocheuse, dense, drôle et politique qui verse rarement dans la flatterie.
