Fin 1971 le groupe anglais Badfinger traîne toujours avec lui la même casserole : un sous Beatles signé sur leur marque Apple. L'aide apportée par George Harrison à son troisième album, en remplacement de l'habituel Geoff Emerick, puis la désaffection du Beatle en plein enregistrement pour être suppléé par un Todd Rundgren qui limite les dégâts, n'arrange rien.
Le groupe est en plein doute, pourtant signataire de deux hits des deux côtés de l'Atlantique en 1970 (« Come And Get It ») et début 1971 (« No Matter What ») et au moment même où Harry Nilsson cartonne aux Etats-Unis avec la reprise de la superbe ballade de Pete Ham et Tom Evans « Without You ». A la sortie de l’album, un célèbre critique américain pourtant fan, les crucifie en déclarant : « Je me demande si j’aimerais ce disque s’il était des Beatles ; la réponse est que les Beatles n’auraient pas pu faire ce disque ». Moins consistant en effet que son prédécesseur, No Dice, Straight Up (« Sans blague ! ») est néanmoins un album rempli de mélodies imparables et de riffs de guitare immédiatement accrocheurs, notamment « Name Of The Game » et « Perfection ».
Badfinger, pionnier du power pop avant la lettre (le terme sera inventé plus tard par le musicologue américain Greg Shaw), avait proposé aussi bien auparavant et donnera aussi bien ensuite, mais les deux titres signés par Pete Ham figurent parmi les plus grands titres du groupe et valent à eux seuls l’album : l’exquise ballade au tempo moyen « Day After Day » toute en rupture, et l’incroyable « Baby Blue », ô combien dignes de leurs protecteurs. Sur le premier, parvenu n°4 aux Etats-Unis début 1972, George Harrison joue les soli de guitare slide dont il a le secret, et Leon Russell du piano. Pour le second, le mixage du 45 tours US est différent de la version originale (plus d’écho sur la caisse claire) ; c’est celle-ci qu’on entend dans le film de Martin Scorsese Les Infiltrés en 2006.
