Musicologically wise-speaking, as Professor Peter Schickele would say, this disc is a blast. Of course, listeners will have to posses the ability to enjoy what might be called a peculiar sense of humor. If, for example, the following joke is more than you can bear, you might consider passing on this disc:
"Knock, knock?"
"Who's there?"
"Ida."
"Ida who?"
"I Dream of Jennie with the Light Brown Hair."
If, however, you find that joke funny -- and particularly if you think it would be even funnier with the set-up turned into a recitative and the punch line turned into a four voice fugue for mixed chorus -- this is definitely the disc for you. Because that joke and others like it litter the disc entitled "Oedipus Tex and Other Choral Calamities" -- litter being the operative word. From the opening country western oratorio cum horse opera Oedipus Tex -- "but my friends just call me Ed" -- through the central haute bourgeoisie whine of "Classical Rap" -- "I got no shame, but I got my pride, trying to get along on the Upper West Side" -- to the prodigal son's belated recognition of his father's worth in the closing "Birthday Ode to ‘Big Daddy' Bach -- "when times get tough, and things look bad, it's nice to have a famous dad" -- Schickele and the hopefully pseudonymous Greater Hoople Area Off-Season Philharmonic and Okay Chorale led by the unfortunately named Newton Wayland bring to light more of the works of the last and the least of the sons of Bach in performances chockablock with zest, vim and vigor. Telarc's sound is clear, deep and honest -- which is more than can be said of Schickele's scholarship.
