Pour une surprise, c’est une surprise. Lil Yachty, rappeur trop vite rangé dans le mumble rap sauce SoundCloud, s’aventure dans une pop psychédélique et synthétique, conservant, comme un fil rouge, sa voix habilement autotunée. Ce cinquième album intitulé Let’s Start Here. divise. Tant mieux. En convoquant dans son sillage musical les spectres de Tame Impala, Pink Floyd, Tyler, The Creator ou Frank Ocean, Lil Yachty cherche à s'installer comme un artiste reconnu et reconnaissable, en s’appuyant sur une équipe de producteurs nommés Justin Raisen (Billie Eilish, Angel Olsen), Sad Pony (Nicki Minaj, Kelela), et surtout Patrick Wimberly, membre additionnel du groupe pop Chairlift.
Il joue, souvent habilement, avec les limites des codes rap, en s’en écartant radicalement, en se positionnant sans cesse contre, en s’ancrant dans une esthétique tout autre. Pas question ici de marier son genre de prédilection à un autre : Let’s Start Here. est une nouvelle voie, peut-être éphémère, mais qui trouve son intérêt dans les titres les plus alambiqués comme REACH THE SUNSHINE. ou la rythmique tout sauf stricte de paint THE sky.
