Quelques années seulement après son premier enregistrement des Suites pour violoncelle de Bach, Matt Haimovitz a eu la tentation de recommencer, mais sans recommencer. Pour ce second enregistrement daté de 2015, il a choisi de « retourner » au manuscrit de la main d’Anna Magdalena Bach – sachant que l’autographe du compositeur a disparu – plutôt qu’aux diverses éditions établies depuis des décennies et qui ont toutes la fâcheuse manie de modifier les données, en particulier en ce qui concerne les articulations, la conduite des « voix », les phrasés. Les auditeurs habitués aux enregistrements les plus fameux du passé entendront sans nul doute la différence ; d’autant que Haimovitz utilise un violoncelle baroque – avec archet baroque, cordes à l’ancienne, chevalet du temps jadis etc. – et même, pour la Sixième Suite, il joue non pas le violoncelle « normal » mais un violoncello piccolo, avec cinq cordes au lieu des quatre habituelles, pour une sonorité bien plus sopranisante dans les aigus.
