After a jump from SST to Quarterstick, the Volcano Suns returned with the swan song Career in Rock. Unfortunately, if the band had once forged a sellable sound from fragments of irate rock excess and restless punk, it now seemed that the band had nowhere to take it. The hangover dirge of these songs uninterestingly recalled past accomplishments, with "Show" repeating the disorder of their debut, The Bright Orange Years, and "Silly Misunderstanding" making a last desperate attempt to come to terms with the shambolic artiness of 1988's Farced. Besides the excellent "Total Eclipse," which nearly crossed Wire with the pyrotechnic unpleasantness of Kiss, the Volcano Suns had labored themselves into a corner and were stuck offering a dismal, self-plagiaristic finale to a sonic concept that had seen better days.
