Six mois après l'enregistrement de son premier disque en solo, Soul Wash, un maxi de six reprises, Ben L'Oncle Soul s'est lancée dans ce projet éponyme constitué presque intégralement de compositions originales qu'il a lui-même coécrites. La seule chanson à ne pas être de sa plume est une version bien particulière du titre "Seven Nation Army" des White Stripes", certes un peu fantaisiste, mais l'oncle Ben n'est-il pas justement porté sur le décalage, son nom et son look étant empruntés à Uncle Ben, l'effigie de la marque de riz du même nom. Heureusement, le décalage est loin d'être la seule caractéristique de l'Oncle, et sa musique exceptionnelle est là pour nous le rappeler. Ben L'Oncle Soul est un premier album qui en impose et qui ne doit pas passer à la trappe sous prétexte de ce style rétro qui revendique fièrement son appartenance au label Motown.
