The German Erdenklang label is known for its unusual and often experimental releases. The latest is by a renowned elder statesman of German electronic music, Reinhard Lakomy, who participated directly in the development of the Mellotron, Moog, DX-7 and sequencer. The release of Aer is a noteworthy event, full of diverse European influences and typically strange Erdenklang quirks. Beginning in a classically harmonious synth mode reminiscent of Vangelis, Lakomy touches upon the sublime and lyrical, the powerfully melodic and the beating of rhythmic paths converging. He achieves a timeless, lingering sound that ranks up there with Richard Burmer's classic compositions. While compelling on "Koyanis," and captivating on "Der Alte Baum" ("The Ancient Tree"), it is the final two tracks that are the coup de grace of this consistently ingenious release. First the title piece, "Aer" -- the God of air as the creator of all harmony -- with its ominous rumblings and distant choruses, writing its own modern mythology as Lakomy cultivates the perfect blend of symphonic eloquence, rhythm and unusual lead melody lines. Then the album closer, aptly titled "Abschied," or "Farewell," brings it all home before drifting off, fully satisfied. Each track seems to capture the immediate attention of the listener, yet is fresh and intriguing enough to invite further airings.
