Hannah Diamond

With her gleaming electronic pop and visuals, Hannah Diamond explores notions of femininity, artifice, and authenticity. Like many of the other artists affiliated with PC Music, Diamond's high-concept style -- which she introduced with 2013's "Pink and Blue" -- is its substance: Her vocals are highly processed, but there's an almost childlike simplicity to her delivery and lyrics; though the synths and beats that back her evoke everything from 2000s Euro-dance to happy hardcore to grime to J-pop and K-pop, they don't sound exactly like anything that came before. While PC Music's aesthetic was often described as polarizing, Diamond scored a Billboard-charting hit with 2014's fluorescent single "Every Night" and gave melancholy depth to her sound on 2019's full-length Reflections. Her final PC Music album, 2023's uplifting Perfect Picture, suggested an empowering new phase of Diamond's artistry. Born Hannah Amond, Diamond established herself as a visual artist and photographer before embarking on her music career. Having studied fashion communication and styling, and influenced by the colorful, hyperreal work of photographers such as David LaChapelle and Nick Knight, she handled post-production on photo shoots for various fashion magazines. After Diamond met GFOTY (short for Girlfriend of the Year, aka Polly-Louisa Salmon) through a friend in 2012, GFOTY introduced her to producer A.G. Cook. At the time, Cook was founding the collective and label PC Music. He and Diamond soon started recording songs together, while she shaped the collective's glossy look as well as its sound. Diamond's first single for the label, "Pink and Blue," appeared in October 2013 and helped define PC Music's brightly lit hyper-pop. Juggling her careers in fashion and photography meant that Diamond concentrated on releasing singles for most of the 2010s. Along with appearing on Cook's "Keri Baby" in January 2014, she also issued "Attachment" that April and "Every Night" in November. Featuring a bolder sound than her previous work, "Every Night" became a streaming hit and ultimately reached number 28 on the Billboard Emerging Artists chart. In 2015, Diamond played South by Southwest as a part of a PC Music showcase and released that November's "Hi." Her 2016 projects included "Paradise," a collaboration with Charli XCX that appeared on XCX's Vroom Vroom EP, and the single "Make Believe," which featured production by Cook and easyFun. Late in 2017, Diamond issued the mixtape Soon I Won't See You at All. The following year, she collaborated with Tommy Cash on "Cool 3D World" from his album ¥€$. In November 2018, Diamond released "True," which, along with the Danny L. Harle team-up "Part of Me," appeared on her first full-length Reflections. Produced once again by Cook, the November 2019 album balanced her typically cheerful-sounding songs with more somber ones. The following April, Reflections Remixes arrived and included reworkings of the album's tracks by Dylan Brady and Umru, while November 2020's Reflections Hard Drive collected alternate versions of Diamond's songs along with bonus materials. Diamond remained busy during the COVID-19 global pandemic, appearing on a 100 gecs remix and Cook's 7G and Apple in 2020 and on Harle's album Harelcore and a remix of Cook's "The Darkness" in 2021. She also began work on her second album that year, recruiting David Gamson of Scritti Politti -- a major influence on the PC Music approach -- as producer. Boasting more uplifting songwriting and a warmer sound informed by late 2000s Eurodance and Britney Spears, Perfect Picture appeared in October 2023 and was one of PC Music's final releases.
