Daine

Filipino-Australian artist daine's angsty, bittersweet hyperpop songs channel emo, hardcore, and trap influences. She gained a following with her early self-released songs before signing with a major label and issuing the popular Oli Sykes collaboration "SALT." A pair of EPs, Quantum Jumping (2022) and shapeless (2023), followed. Raised in Melbourne, daine grew up listening to 5 Seconds of Summer and the 1975 before she started going to punk and emo shows. She found camaraderie through her city's hardcore scene, which inspired her to go vegan at the age of 13. Influenced by artists such as Tigers Jaw, Joyce Manor, and Code Orange, she started making songs that blended atmospheric guitars, wistful vocals, and trap beats. After releasing a few early demos online, she issued several singles in 2020, including "Picking Flowers" and "Ascension" (a remake of the first song she ever wrote). Her profile got a boost when Charli XCX shared a nightcore version of her song "Bloody Knees," and the left-field pop star made a guest appearance on daine's Halloween online performance. She signed to Warner Music Australia, and in April 2021, she released "boys wanna txt," a single produced by 100 gecs' Dylan Brady and Sydney-based Ryan Jacob, featuring a guest verse by emo rapper ericdoa. Another collaboration, "SALT," featured Oli Sykes, after which daine began ramping up for her first EP. Released in early 2022, Quantum Jumping benefitted from a pair of catchy downtempo singles, "Weekend" and "IDC." The playful "Boythots" showed her range and was followed in 2023 by another EP, shapeless.
