Cartel De Santa
Mexican hardcore rap group Cartel de Santa made their eponymous full-length debut in 2003 and grew exponentially more popular with each subsequent album release. Based out of Santa Catarina, they had already amassed a significant catalog of hits like "Perros" and "Cheka Way" before they finally made the Mexican Top Ten with their 2010 release Sincopa. 2014's Golpe Avisa went multi-platinum, though after 2016's Viejo Marihuano, they entered something of a hiatus, managing only a handful of singles. Their eventual return in 2023 yielded the La Kelly-assisted hit "Shorty Party."
Founded in 1996 in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, Mexico, the group was originally comprised of MC Babo (born Eduardo Dávalos de Luna), MC Dharius, producer Rowan Rabia, and DJ Agustín. In association with West Coast rap producer/engineer Jason Roberts, best known for his work with Cypress Hill, Cartel de Santa made their self-titled album debut in 2003 on RCA Records. Featuring the hit singles "Perros," "Todos Mueren por Mi," and "La Pelotona," the album garnered significant acclaim in the Mexican rap scene, which was in a state of limbo following the dissolution of the movement's leading group, Control Machete. A year later they released Cartel de Santa, Vol. 2, which spawned popular singles like "Blah, Blah, Blah" and "La Llamada" and featured guest appearances by Julieta Venegas, Tego Calderón, and Ariana Puello. Shortly after the release of third album, 2006's Volumen ProIIIbido, with its hit single "Cheka Wey," MC Babo was imprisoned for accidentally shooting someone in his entourage. While he did nine months' time in prison, Sony BMG satiated fans with a 2007 Greatest Hits collection. The group's fourth album, Cartel de Santa, Vol. 4, appeared in 2008 and one its singles, "Hay Mamita," referenced the shooting incident.
Despite their growing popularity throughout the decade, it wasn't until the 2010 release of Sincopa that Cartel de Santa first reached the Top Ten of the Mexican albums chart. The album earned them a Latin Grammy nomination and gold certification. A 2013 shakeup saw MC Dharius leave the group, after which they released 2014's multi-platinum Golpe Avisa. Cartel de Santa kept on rolling with 2016's Viejo Marihuano which featured guests like Millonario and Santa Estilo.
After this, the band became less prolific. A scattering of singles carried them into the next decade, though they eventually returned to form with the 2023 single "Piensa en Mi." It was followed by "Shorty Party," a collaboration with La Kelly that hit number 20 on Billboard's Hot Rap Song chart.
