Bob Van Asperen
Organist and conductor, Bob Van Asperen's works concentrate mainly on seventeenth and eighteenth century composers and musicians. Highly regarded as an organist, Bob Van Asperen also plays the harpsichord and clavichord proficiently. His style of playing can only be described as graceful and sensuous.
Born in Amsterdam, Bob Van Asperen studied the harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt and the organ with Albert de Klerk. After finishing his classical studies and his practical lessons in 1972 he began performing and recording. He has recorded for EMI, Teldec, Sony Classical and Astree. Among his recordings are the Goldberg Variations, works of J.S. Bach, The Tears of Peter and Paul, a Dutch oratorio and the first Dutch harpsichord sonata by composers Sweelinck and Sybrandus van Noordt. With grace and proficiency, Bob Van Asperen makes the music of the 17th and 18th century composers come alive. He has also performed works by Couperin, Scarlatti and music from the Low Countries. An international classical organist, Bob Van Asperen has performed tours in Holland, Europe, the United States, Russia and Australia. Because of his musical knowledge and genius he has judged several harpsichord competitions including contests in Amsterdam, Paris and Hamburg, Germany.
Bob Van Asperen's classical genius has not gone unnoticed. He has won various prizes for his recordings in France, Belgium and Holland. Among the prizes he has received are the Edison Prize in 1979, the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, the Prix Cecilia, the Timbre d'Argent and the Diapasond'Or. These prizes reflect only a part of Bob Van Asperen. Besides striving for excellence in his own musical repertoire, he has also devoted time to helping and educating young classical musicians.
Residing in Amsterdam, Bob Van Asperen is a musical professor at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam where he teaches organ, clavichord, harpsichord and other musical specialty courses. His classes attract students worldwide. During the summer he holds special academies where students can learn from him for only a couple of weeks instead of semesters at a time. He has held academies in Germany, Holland, Italy, France and Canada. Students can learn not only to perform but also the history behind 17th and 18th century music and composers. In teaching young striving musicians Bob Van Asperen believes he is giving back to the community and restoring the history of composers from the early centuries. In order to gain international fame, classical musicians recreate the works of composers into a style of their own. Bob Van Asperen is an accomplished organist, harpsichordist and conductor who continues to reconstruct the works of classical composers.
