A. Savage

A. Savage, also known as Andrew Savage, is one of the founders of the indie rock band Parquet Courts and is distinguished as a solo artist as well. Like his work with the band, Savage's 2017 solo debut Thawing Dawn was dominated by dark, melodic tunes fueled with edgy energy and dour wit, presented in a more streamlined form, while also detouring into slower, more contemplative sounds on several tracks. 2023's Several Songs About Fire revealed a cleaner and more confident approach without straying from his most recognizable sound. Born in Denton, Texas, in 1986, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Savage was a founding member of D.I.Y. punk band Teenage Cool Kids at their formation in 2006. With that band, Savage cut his teeth in the world of independently booking tours, releasing music, and distributing records. In 2008, while recording the second Teenage Cool Kids album, Savage began collaborating with friend Jason Kelly on the more wide-ranging and experimental project Fergus & Geronimo. Fergus & Geronimo would release multiple albums and singles over the next few years, though a move from Texas to Brooklyn in 2010 found Savage launching the new band Parquet Courts and slowly phasing out Teenage Cool Kids, who officially disbanded the next year. Critics and fans alike took to Parquet Courts upon the release of 2013's Light Up Gold, and the band quickly became the most popular of Savage's myriad projects. A constant cycle of touring and recording, and frequent album releases, continued for the band for the majority of the next decade, with Parquet Courts playing internationally and releasing four albums between 2014 and 2018. Savage also designed the cover and package for their 2016's Human Performance, which earned him a Grammy nomination. (He'd also create the cover art for Jack Cooper's 2017 solo album Sandgrown.) Under the moniker A. Savage, the songwriter released his first solo album, Thawing Dawn, on his own Dull Tools imprint in 2017. After returning to Parquet Courts for 2021's Sympathy for Life and their subsequent touring cycle, Savage focused on visual art and occasional DJ gigs before starting work on a second solo effort. Like Thawing Dawn, 2023's Several Songs About Fire was released under the name A. Savage on Rough Trade, and he set out on a solo tour in support.
