Donna Summer (née LaDonna Adrian Gaines) was born on 31 December 1948 in Boston. She began singing in the late 1960s, but it was her encounter with the pope of Italian disco, Giorgio Moroder, during a tour of Germany in the mid-1970s that turned her career around. With the help of the German producer she released her biggest hits, including ‘Love to Love You Baby’ and ‘I Feel Love’. By staying at the top of the charts for several years, Donna Summer set herself apart from other countless, often short-lived disco divas. She made shrewd changes of direction (toward rock, like on ‘Hot Stuff’ in particular) and surrounded herself with musicians and producers suited to her style. During the disco era, Summer was the only one to have three double-albums at number one in the charts: Live And More, Bad Girls and On The Radio. One of her biggest hits came in the 1980s with ‘She Works Hard For The Money’, which became a feminist anthem. Aged 63, Donna Summer died of cancer on 17 May 2012 in Key West, Florida.
