Q
The spiritual successor to artists such as D'Angelo and Frank Ocean, South Florida singer/songwriter, guitarist, and producer Q infuses his blend of R&B, soul, and acoustic pop with sensitivity and an introspective point of view. With a lyrical focus on emotion, he sheds light on mental health and toys with gender norms, offering an alternative perspective that allows for expressions of anxiety and vulnerability as much as romance and sensuality. Debuting in 2018 with the Thoughts LP, he made his breakthrough the following year with Forest Green. After the 2020 EP The Shave Experiment, Q issued a string of vibrant singles leading up to his full-length debut, Soul, PRESENT, in mid-2023.
Hailing from the Pembroke Pines neighborhood in Broward County, Florida, the multi-talented artist born Q Marsden grew up surrounded by music, spending time in the U.S. and Jamaica with his studio-owning father and musician mother (whose résumé included work with Beenie Man and Bounty Killer). In addition to sitting in on sessions with his dad, he also fostered his love for music at church. Influenced by Michael Jackson, Childish Gambino, and Drake, he developed an alternative R&B style that centered on his light falsetto and laid-back energy. After releasing his debut album, Thoughts, in 2018, Q caught the attention of the public with its follow-up, Forest Green, which added hip-hop production to his acoustic guitar sound.
For 2020's EP The Shave Experiment (Columbia Records), he toned down the hard-hitting beats of Forest Green in favor of a hazy, hypnotic style that was inspired by 1970s soul groups such as Earth, Wind & Fire. That same year, he also appeared on the season four soundtrack to the television show Insecure, teaming with Baby Rose and Raedio for "Show You (Remix)." A "director's cut" of The Shave Experiment appeared in 2021, after which Q began releasing a series of singles including 2022's "Stereo Driver" and the 2023 tracks "Luv (I Know I Want This for Real)" and "Not Alone." All three appeared on his debut album, Soul, PRESENT, in May of that year. A non-album single, "Hello," arrived a few months later.
