Poundz

South London's Poundz used his charisma and bold vocals to break into the U.K. mainstream in the late 2010s, securing a Top 40 hit with the minimalist "Opp Thot." Having spent his formative years listening to the likes of Stormzy and Section Boyz, South London's Poundz realized his own musical ambitions in his late teens, fusing his U.K. hip-hop roots with the emerging sounds of the city. A bold 2015 appearance on freestyle show BL@CKBOX proved a defining moment in the MC's early career -- over a minimalist, clattering beat, the young rapper demonstrated his relentless flow, strong affinity for wordplay, and blunt vocal tones. Testing the waters in a variety of scenes, his early releases saw confident inroads into grime ("Blow Like Guns," "Fortnite"), trap ("Super Vision"), and Afroswing ("Golden Child," "Best Life"), before he eventually settled in the U.K.'s emerging drill scene. Among his early successes were "Lions Den," "The End," and "SkengBop," each delivering a set of brutal stories, haunting productions, and jumpy flows. In late 2019, Poundz burst onto the U.K. mainstream with the minimalist braggadocio of "Opp Thot." The track's simplistic, cocky approach to drill landed it at the number 33 spot on the U.K. charts, soon to be bolstered by all-star remix with Ambush Buzzworl, Snap Capone, and Yxng Bane. After consolidating this success with 2020 singles like "Smooth Criminal" and "TikTok," the MC used 2021 to drop his debut project, No Smoke Without Fire, a varied offering with a balance of melodic and abrasive directions.
