Openside
Named after a Quidditch term from the Harry Potter universe, New Zealand's Openside specialize in bright, spirited indie pop. The band formed when punk-pop band Maybe Rave joined forces with vocalist Possum Plows, who was crowned Auckland University’s Songwriter of the Year in 2014. Plows, guitarist/vocalist PJ Shepherd, bass player Harry Carter, and drummer George Powell released their streamlined debut single as Openside, "Worth It," in the spring of 2015.
Early singles and the resulting buzz led to a record deal with Warner Music in March 2016, and the label released "Letting It Out" that summer. The electropop tune topped the streaming charts in New Zealand, and the band won opening slots for acts including Ladyhawke, Twenty One Pilots, and Ellie Goulding before the arrival of their debut EP, Push Back, in September 2016. It debuted at number 12 on the New Zealand albums chart.
