Nina Ferro
b. 6 September 1973, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Ferro began singing while in her early teens and soon thereafter took an interest in jazz although her formal musical education was in the classical form. In 1991, she joined other young jazz musicians in the Hotter Than Six band. The group worked often in and around Melbourne and meanwhile she continued studying, now with the Improvisation Department at the Victorian College of the Arts. She also joined a contemporary improvising ensemble, Ten Apples On Top, and toured Australia with Hotter Than Six. She travelled overseas to Vanuatu for the South Pacific Jazz Festival and to the USA for the 1994 and 1995 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. In 1995, Ferro attracted the attention of the non-musical press for her appearance and style, being named as one of Australia’s most eligible women. Heard by Jim Cullum, Ferro has appeared many times as guest on his Riverwalk concerts and radio programmes in San Antonio, Texas, and also recorded with him. She has appeared at jazz festivals in Australia, Japan, the USA, the Netherlands, and at many club and concert venues throughout Europe, Scandinavia and the Americas.
Artists with whom Ferro has appeared and sometimes recorded are numerous and include Tom Baker, Bob Barnard, Don Burrows, and pianists Joe Chindamo and Dick Hyman. With a wide range of musical influences, mostly in jazz, and with the vocal technique to accomplish all that her imagination suggests, Ferro has developed into one of the most popular young singers who have chosen to build into their repertoires a considerable amount of pre-60s music. To this music, and to the more contemporary material she also sings, she brings a vocal sound that is rich, powerful and passionate.
