Mars
Known for his Hannibal Lecter-inspired mask and macabre, controversy-courting horrorcore style, California rapper Mario Delgado (aka Mars) emerged in the late 1990s and quickly became a fixture of the underground horror-rap movement. He expanded his fan base in 2008 when his track "They Watchin' Me" appeared on Insane Clown Posse's Billboard-charting compilation Tunnel Runners. Since then, he has remained at the fore of the horrorcore scene via lurid independent releases like Glockcoma (2017) and Locked Up a Broad (2019).
Born in Antioch and raised in the East Bay town of Pittsburgh, California, Delgado's rap career began in 1997 when he and childhood friend J RZ founded Mad Insanity Records and began releasing their home-recorded tapes locally. He issued his "unofficial" debut album, S.I.D.S. (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), the following year -- Mad Insanity garnered some buzz in 1999 after reports of an altercation with Eminem and Proof at the Fillmore appeared in Bay Area newspapers and online hip-hop blogs. In 2005, Mars unleashed his debut EP, Mars Attacks, which became a regional hit and caught the attention of hip-hop distribution label Beyond Spaced Entertainment, which reissued Mars Attacks worldwide. Later that year, Mars elicited national attention after a self-professed fan murdered nine people at a Minnesota high school.
Mars found mainstream success in 2008 with the single "They Watchin' Me," which appeared on the Psychopathic Records and sublabel Hatchet House-issued Tunnel Runners, and helped push the ICP-adjacent underground rap compilation onto the Billboard Top 25 Rap Albums chart. Later that year he released the School House Glock: Extra Credit EP, which sought to satirize the controversy surrounding his role in the 2005 school shooting, but only generated more discord after another fan killed four people in Virginia. 2012 saw the release of The Zodiac Mixtape Limited Edition LP, and two years later Empire Distribution issued all of his previous material digitally.
In 2017, Mars relocated to the Midwest and signed with Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Force 5 Records. His first release for the fledgling label was the single "Creatures of Night," which featured Tech N9ne and Twiztid. Later that year he issued his first official full-length effort, Glockcoma. A collaborative effort with Young Swizz, Drunk on the HWY, arrived in 2018, and in 2019 he unveiled the long-player Locked Up a Broad and a pair of EPs, Murder and The Hangover, the latter of which saw him teaming up again with Young Swizz. 2020 marked the arrival of Devils and Demons, a collaboration with hardcore punk/hip-hop vocalist Danny Diablo.
