Jim Causley
b. 31 October 1981, Exeter, Devon, England. Causley’s parents were folk singers and he was immersed in traditional music from a young age. He sang in church and folk choirs and also attended Sidmouth and Dartmoor folk festivals. Later, he studied at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, becoming an early graduate of that institution’s Folk and Traditional Music degree course. Meanwhile, he sang throughout the UK, his rich, bass voice attracting favourable attention. He was heard by veteran folk singers Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy and toured with them regularly and appeared on the 2006 Waterson:Carthy album, Holy Heathens And The Old Green Man.
In 2006 and again the following year, Causley was nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, first as soloist, then as leader of the Devil’s Interval, an a cappella vocal trio with Lauren McCormick and Emily Portman. He has also worked with fiddler John McCusker (as Under One Sky), the Dartmoor Pixie Band, Mawkin (as Mawkin:Causley), and regular collaborators include guitarist James Dumpleton and fiddler John Dipper. In addition to singing, Causley also plays accordion. When not performing, Causley is active with Devon’s Wren Trust, promoting traditional arts and music in the area.
