Infinite River

Detroit trio Infinite River play a sprawling, peaceful form of mostly instrumental psychedelia that incorporates layers of soothing, gauzy guitar textures as well as harmonium and tanpura drones. The group's members are veterans of the Michigan music scene, having played in bands such as His Name Is Alive, Slumber Party, Detroit Cobras, and many others. The musicians released an album with folk troubadour Ethan Daniel Davidson as Seedsmen to the World before issuing their first two LPs as Infinite River, Prequel and Space Mirror, in 2023. Tabula Rasa, the group's much more hard-rocking third album, appeared in 2024. Infinite River consists of guitarists Gretchen Gonzales (Slumber Party, Universal Indians) and Joey Mazzola (Detroit Cobras, Sponge) as well as His Name Is Alive's Warren Defever playing harmonium and tanpura. Additionally, Steve Nistor, whose many previous collaborators range from Gnarls Barkley to Sparks, contributes drums and percussion. The four musicians began recording relaxed but highly disciplined and melodic drone-rock instrumentals together at a home studio in Birmingham, Michigan, during the COVID-19 lockdown. They also worked with another regular collaborator, songwriter, and folksinger Ethan Daniel Davidson, on the eponymous Seedsmen to the World (2022), an LP that included spaced-out interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan and Creedence Clearwater Revival. The first Infinite River album, Prequel, was released by Birdman in March 2023. A mellower second LP, Space Mirror, followed in August. By contrast, third album Tabula Rasa, released in 2024, was much heavier and more driving, approaching hard rock and dream pop.
