Andrew MacGregor
Australian musician Andrew MacGregor is a Japanese-trained shakuhachi master who first heard the instrument on a recording by Leon Russell. Captivated by its ethereal sound and the depth of feeling it conveyed, he became passionately interested in the music handed down through the Zen Buddhist tradition. He began his studies with Riley Lee in 1985 and Yokoyama Katsuya in 1989. In 1993 MacGregor traveled to Osaka where he spent an intensive period as a live-in apprentice (uchi deshi) with teacher and master Tadashi Tajima. He has studied with Miyata Kohachiro since 2001.
In 1994, he recorded Nesting of the Cranes, a set of traditional duets for shakuhachi with Riley Lee. Four years later, he collaborated with classical guitarist Marion Schaap on Music for Guitar & Shakuhachi -- Album One. The following year, he issued Four Shakuhachi Meditations, which combined the power of Zen meditations with additional instrumentation, vocals, and textures. In 2001, MacGregor released Ren-Men, a collaboration with award-winning Japanese koto player Miho Yamaji. 2003's Mizuho paired him with 21-string koto player Haruko Watanabe. That same year, he was a finalist in the 2003 All-Japan National Music Competition for traditional instruments. Releases such as Classical Shakuhachi, Zen Golden Memories, and Sentimental Shakuhachi carried him through the decade. He also issued singles "Tanah Pusaka" with Jia Wei Lee and "Wild Geese."
An experienced performer who has graced stages in Australia, Japan, the U.S., and the Netherlands, MacGregor has lived in Penang, Malaysia since 2015, teaching and performing by request.
