Buddy Tate
A prototype Texas tenor saxophonist with a huge tone, fine command of the instrument in every register and outstanding blues sensibility, Buddy Tate has been an active player since the '20s. He's done swing, soul jazz, R&B and rock and roll, traditional jazz, big band and blues among other styles. He began playing professionally in the late '20s, and worked with Terrence Holder, Count Basie and Andy Kirk in the early and mid-'30s. He spent nearly five years with Nat Towles band, then rejoined Basie in 1939. Tate replaced Herschel Evans and remained for a decade. During the early '50s, he played with Hot Lips Page, Lucky Millinder and Jimmy Rushing. Tate recorded for Columbia and Vanguard in the '50s, and formed his own band in 1953. This became the resident group at the Celebrity Club in New York for over 20 years. Tate would occasionally reunite with Basie, while working with others like Buck Clayton, with whom he toured Europe in the late '50s and early '60s. There was a session for Candid with Nancy Harrow in 1960, and another for Columbia in 1962. Tate led a group on his own European tour in the late '60s, and played in Saints And Sinners. The '70s were a busy period, as Tate made recordings for Muse, MJR, Chiaroscuro, Black Lion and Sackville. He co-led a band with Paul Quinichette at the West End cafe in 1975 and played in Canada with Jay McShann and Jim Galloway. He also co-led a group with Al Grey. Tate toured with The Texas Tenors in the early '80s, and played at the Newport and Cork festivals. He was a regular at the Grande Parade du Jazz in Nice. Tate also kept busy recording in the '80s, cutting sessions for Open Sky, Sackville and Concord. Tate dates from the '60s,'70s and '80s are available on CD.
