"The strangest thing about this 25th anniversary is that it doesn't seem like 25 years. I'd say more like six. Or five." In 1994, Courtney Taylor-Taylor formed the Dandy Warhols in Portland, Oregon. One year later, Dandys Rule OK was released, a first comet that was launched between the galaxies of psychedelic rock, shoegaze and the most graceful pop, but nevertheless abused by critics. After making their mark on alternative rock with the strength of nine albums, the Dandys returned to their Odditorium studio to invent the more sober deliriums of Why You So Crazy. While their last release Distorland erased a little bit of the Dandy Warhols formula that was already starting to crumble on The Machine (2016), this tenth effort is different.
Apart from the darkness of the hypnotic progressions on Next Time I Know, featuring Courtney’s whispering voice, the prize goes to the closing tracks. Forever, which is vaguely reminiscent of Hang Me Up To Dry by the Cold War Kids, reveals Thomas Lauderdale's (Pink Martini) piano loops joined by Courtney's retouched voice to create melodies as grandiloquent as they are distressing. The track seamlessly merges into Ravel's Ondine played by Hunter Noack. In addition, a few bubble gum pop tracks enrich the nuances, such as Thee Elegant Bum, Small Town Girls or Motor City Steel. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
