While the years continue to whiz by, they remain unfazed. Since 2007 and their first album, Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn’s self assurance has kept them grounded and authentic. This pair of mavericks from Nottingham depict England’s quirks with the same panache they had in their earliest tirades. Their critical eye has not softened one iota, on the contrary: Williamson admits to being more enraged than ever, but that trends have moved on, arguably for the better. Maintaining his trademark minimalism, Fearn has carved out some very smooth 90's rap instrumentals (Smash Each Other Up), along with fiercer grime (Dlwhy). At the opposite end of the spectrum you’ll find Apart from You, dressed up with a few piano notes; a surprisingly melodic and poetic kind of ballad. Make no mistake, their love for post-punk bass is still present, on the likes of Pit 2 Pit and Tilldipper for example. For softness, Florence Shaw from Dry Cleaning swoops in to lay some placid vocals on Force 10 From Navarone, urging to keep one's head above water. Even more surprising is Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction’s appearance the hectic beats of So Trendy. Overall, it is a beautiful, uncompromising and necessary release. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
