At last! Yelawolf has released an album better than his last that many considered unsurpassable. After several mediocre albums of imprecise and indecisive style, this ‘Slumerican’ of the bayous was spotted by Eminem and signed in 2011. Since then, he has never been better. His fifth and final record to be released under Eminem’s Shady Records, Trunk Muzik III brings to a climactic end the Trunk Muzik. The album distinguishes itself from its predecessors; the country-southern stance has been abandoned and Catfish Billy returns to his roots. It is an aggressive form of rap with searing lyrics that aren’t afraid to delve into the sentimental (Addiction, Over Here). The only thing that remains from his old style is perhaps All the Way Up and its guitar loops. We hope Yela gets the recognition he deserves after spending years in the shadow of his mentor and breaks free of the vicious cycle that is indie rap. With experimental and varied production and well-chosen features (such as Rowdy with MGK), Trunk Muzik III shows the beginnings of a solo career of great promise. A sorely missed release on the album is the diss Bloody Sunday where Yelawolf slams Post Malone, MGK and G-Eazy. © Charlotte Saintoin
