No one exemplifies the term "rap game" quite like Ray Benzino, whose bizarre journey to hip-hop relevancy hits a speed bump nearly every time he releases a record. Circa late 2001, it was the controversy bubbling up around his Source-hyped record The Benzino Project (all that promotion stemmed from his co-ownership of the magazine). One year later, it was his single "Pull Your Skirt Up," a dis track focused on Eminem, an easy target; Benzino's puerile race-baiting fooled no one and, fittingly, sparked a pair of far superior answer tracks from Eminem himself. Redemption, Benzino's third straight record on a different label, is supposed to make it all better for hip-hop fans (he helpfully includes the definition of the word on the cover just to make sure they get the point), but it illustrates only that self-promotion is about all this rapper/producer has going for him. He's got moderate skills, but he's no match for 90 percent of the rappers making records for major labels, and his productions hop on nearly every bandwagon he can flag down. Four of the tracks are Hangmen 3 productions, and they're the best here. "Rock the Party," a Mario Winans production (and feature), is far superior to anything else, though guests Jadakiss, Scarface, and Daz Dillinger each get in good rhymes on their tracks.
