The style known as "pagode," in the Carioca context, means ancient samba reunions. As time passed, it constituted a more or less generic samba style, which consists of the typical partido-alto samba style with variations, a more linear melody, the surdo beat, and "centering" by cavaquinho or banjo. More recently, it was appropriated by the recording industry with pervasive, phenomenal success, which infused in it corny lyrics, massive keyboards (sugary "strings"), and a stereotyped, watered-down samba beat, which became known as "pagodinho romântico." On the other hand, there are still people who have the true spirit of samba in their hearts, researching the tradition through the strong bonds of friendship kept with the genuine keepers and creators of the samba patrimony in the Carioca hills. Beth Carvalho is one of these. A professional of samba since 1965, this middle class singer/composer delivers the best pagode pearls (as the title recognizes), composed by the masters Arlindo Cruz, Sombrinha, Jorge Aragão, Candeia, Monarco, and many others, in the generous, overflowing with passion Carioca tradition, helped by great samba/gafieira musicians and the special guest Zeca Pagodinho.
