While global energy prices are increasing, American guitarist Tinsley Ellis gives us an example of how to lower our electric bill: by unplugging our guitars. Known for over 30 years as one of the champions of blues rock (the kind featuring crazy electric guitar), Tinsley Ellis has come out with his first acoustic album Naked Truth. It's not only in the interest of saving energy, but also of a return to the basics, to music that predates electricity altogether (or at least electrical amplifying instruments). Naked Truth is an homage to the blues of the 30s, fashioned and immortalized by Son House, Charley Patton, and Skip James. Tinsley Ellis dives into this revered style over the course of three covers and nine original compositions inspired by the greats and the way that John Foley and Leo Kottke revisited their music in the 60s. Here, Tinsley Ellis mainly plays a metal slide guitar, whose integrated resonator replaces an electric amp with no problem at all. A virtuosic guitarist, he doesn't go overboard, putting his usual wizardry on mute, tapping his foot to the rhythm, staying spontaneous, and giving his all to the songs that he plays as if they were rough sketches.
