John Surman and Jack DeJohnette (Invisible Nature), Charles Lloyd and Billy Higgins (Which Way Is East), Max Roach and Anthony Braxton (Two in One - One in Two), Dewey Redman and Ed Blackwell (Red Black), John Zorn and Milford Graves (50th Birthday Celebration), Sonny Simmons and Billy Higgins (Backwoods Suite) and – to save the best for last – John Coltrane and Rashied Ali (Interstellar Space): saxophone/drum duets are rare gems on the streets of the great city of jazz. But it was this configuration that tenor player Binker Golding and drummer Moses Boyd chose for their ascent of their own personal Everest. The young due (26 and 29 years old respectively) who are active on the bubbling British scene thought big for their second record: a double album more than 80 minutes long recorded over two days in the summer of 26: no editing, no effects, no cheating! Those who were present at the furious one-on-one concert that these two gave know the rhythmic and narrative potential of their music. A concentrated energy that sparks from the first disc, Journey To The Mountain Of Forever throughout which the breath possessed by the ghost of Sonny Rollins (Fete By The River) is an incredibly powerful locomotive. For the second disc, Binker and Moses welcome the saxophonist Evan Parker, trumpet player Byron Wallen, harpist Tori Handsley, percussionist Sarathy Korwar and drummer Yussef Dayes into their supercharged cavalcade. These guests mould themselves flawlessly into the inspired improvisations of their young countrymen, and they are also capable of fitting into the most spiritual and meditative climates (Gifts From The Vibrations Of Light).
